HOW TO PREPARE FOR CLASS 7 MATH OLYMPIAD

Mathematics Olympiad is an international level competition for school  students to discover and enhance their mathematical aptitudes. It is an  international championship mathematics competition held annually among school students. The Math Olympiad helps school students to prepare for future  competitive examinations. The problem solving skill of students will get improved  by participating in this examination. The preparation and participation in these  types of competitive examinations will make the school students to think  analytically and critically. The Math Olympiad is conducted for the school students  of class 1 to class 12. There is difference in conducting Math Olympiad exams for  class 1 – 4 and class 5-12. Let’s see how to prepare for the Class 7 Math Olympiad.

The duration of the exam is 60 minutes. The exam is out of 60 marks. The  question paper consists of 50 multiple choice questions which is divided into 4  sections including:-

I. Logical Reasoning which includes 15 questions.

II. Mathematical Reasoning which includes 20 questions.

III. Everyday Mathematics which includes 10 questions.

IV. Achievers Section which includes 5 questions.

The first three sections Logical reasoning, Mathematical reasoning and Everyday  mathematics carry 1 mark for each question whereas the achievers section carry 3 marks for each of the questions. Students are required to mark the answers on  an OMR sheet. Now, Let’s see the some questions regarding the syllabus:-

3) Develop logical reasoning.

4) Prepare well by practicing more and more mathematics related questions.  More practice makes improvement.

There are some guidelines for the examination. They are the following:-

1) The medium of the exam is English.

2) CBSE, ICSE, ISC and other State Board Syllabus is followed for the setting of  test papers.

3) The exam is conducted during school hours only.

4) Calculator is restricted inside the exam hall.

The Mathematics Olympiad competition is held among different countries. In  India, the participation in the IMO was started since 1989. The Homi Bhabha  Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai, India under the National Board  for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) is responsible for the operation of the Math  Olympiad in India. Participating countries send minimum 6 students each year.  The selection process includes several stages of competition and the final 6 will be  chosen. The various stages includes;

Stage 1 – Pre-regional Mathematics Olympiad

Stage 2 – Regional Mathematics Olympiad

Stage 3 – National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO)

Stage 4 – International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp

Stage 5 – International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

The best way to prepare for the Math Olympiad is;

1) Make your own ideas/ methods to understand the solutions well. 2) Practice makes everything better.

3) Start preparation early and it will help for time management. 4) Take short and scheduled break during study.

5) Practice OMR sheet.

6) Collect the study materials as early as possible.

7) Review the notes.

8) Get maximum of 8 hours of sleep a night, especially on the day before  exam and it will refresh your mind.

9) Have fun, relax and study.
